Till Hennings untersucht anhand der überlieferten Handschriften die Sammlung von Dichtung im Ostfrankenreich des 9. Jahrhunderts. Dabei werden die Verbindungen zwischen Institutionen und Personen im kulturellen Netzwerk der karolingischen renovatio offengelegt. Für zahlreiche Handschriften wird erstmals eine kodikologische Untersuchung nach modernen Gesichtspunkten vorgenommen. Diese Analyse der Nutzung der Handschriften ergibt eine Neusituierung der Dichtung bezüglich ihrer Multifunktionalität innerhalb der vielfältigen institutionell-pragmatischen Kontexte. Insbesondere das Verhältnis von Schule und Dichtung wird konkretisiert und gezeigt, dass Dichtung nicht nur Schullektüre und Handschriften mit Dichtung nicht nur Schulbücher waren. Die strukturelle Ordnung des Bandes nach Skriptorien ist ferner ein Beitrag zur Bildungsgeschichte der einzelnen Schreiborte. The topic of this volume is the Collection of Poetry in 9th century East Francia on the basis of the surviving manuscripts. It gives a fresh look on the connections between institutions and persons in the network of the Carolingian 'renovatio'. Many manuscripts have been analysed here according to modern codicological standards for the first time. The analysis of the use of the manuscripts has resulted in a new appraisal of poetry in the institutional and pragmatic contexts of the time. The topic of the educational use of poetry has been greatly expanded in this context. The arrangent of the study in terms of single scriptoria has also presents a educational history of these institutions.

Russian-language edition: In Russia and America a perceived absence of literature gave rise to grandiose notions of literature's importance. This book examines how two traditions worked to refigure cultural lack, not by disputing it but by insisting on it, by representing the nation's (putative) cultural deficit as a moral and aesthetic advantage. Through a comparative study of Gogol and Hawthorne, this book examines parallels that seem particularly striking when we consider that these traditions had virtually no points of contact. Yet the unexpected parallels between these authors are the result of historical similarities: Russians and Americans felt obliged to develop a manifestly national literature ex nihilo, and to do so in an age when an unprecedented diversity of printed texts were circulating among an ever more heterogeneous reading public. Responding to these conditions, Gogol and Hawthorne articulated ideas that would prove influential for their nations' literary development: that is, despite the culture's thinness and deviation from European norms, it would soon produce works that would surpass European literature in significance.

In The Postcolonial African Genocide Novel, Chigbo Anyaduba examines fictional responses to mass atrocities occurring in postcolonial Africa. Through a comparative reading of novels responding to the genocides of the Igbo in Nigeria (1966-1970) and the Tutsi in Rwanda (1990-1994), the book underscores the ways that literary encounters with genocides in Africa's postcolonies have attempted to reimagine the conditions giving rise to exterminatory forms of mass violence. The book concretizes and troubles one of the apparent truisms of genocide studies, especially in the context of imaginative literature: that the reality of genocide more often than not resists meaningfulness. Particularly given the centrality of this truism to artistic responses to the Holocaust and to genocides more generally, Anyaduba tracks the astonishing range of meanings drawn by writers at a series of (temporal, spatial, historical, cultural and other) removes from the realities of genocide in Africa's postcolonies, a set of meanings that are often highly‐specific and irreducible to maxims or foundational cases. The book shows that in the artistic projects to construct meanings against genocide's nihilism writers of African genocides deploy tropes that while significantly oriented to African concerns are equally shaped by the representational conventions and practices associated with the legacies of the Holocaust.

In Gender Violence and the Transnational Politics of the Honor Crime, Dana M. Olwan examines how certain forms of violence become known, recognized, and contested across multiple geopolitical contexts-looking specifically at a particular form of gender-based violence known as the "honor crime" and tracing how a range of legal, political, and literary texts inform normative and critical understandings of this term. Although studies now acknowledge the complicated mobilizations of honor crime discourses, the ways in which these discourses move across different geographies and contexts remain relatively unexplored. This book fills that void by providing a transnational feminist examination of the disparate yet interconnected sites of the US, Canada, Jordan, and Palestine, showing how the concept travels across nations and is deployed to promote hegemonic agendas.

This open access book studies breath and breathing in literature and culture and provides crucial insights into the history of medicine, health and the emotions, the foundations of beliefs concerning body, spirit and world, the connections between breath and creativity and the phenomenology of breath and breathlessness. Contributions span the classical, medieval, early modern, Romantic, Victorian, modern and contemporary periods, drawing on medical writings, philosophy, theology and the visual arts as well as on literary, historical and cultural studies. The collection illustrates the complex significance and symbolic power of breath and breathlessness across time: breath is written deeply into ideas of nature, spirituality, emotion, creativity and being, and is inextricable from notions of consciousness, spirit, inspiration, voice, feeling, freedom and movement. The volume also demonstrates the long-standing connections between breath and place, politics and aesthetics, illuminating both contrasts and continuities.
